Aloha Ohana,
We have been invited to participate in the HCRA \ IVF Rigging Grant Project.
Our club’s involvement will include conducting a hands-on instructional session on May 8th at 4:30 PM at the club, featuring our Koa canoe, KU KOA MANUTEA. The session will be led by Coach Kawika Williams, who will guide members of our Na‘Opio program (ages 8–17) in proper rigging techniques, as well as the cultural significance of rigging the koa canoe.
All Kihei Canoe Club members and their families are invited to attend, reinforcing the importance of community-wide participation in cultural education. We will need volunteers to help bring the koa canoe down and assist with putting it away after the session. Your help will be greatly appreciated to make this event run smoothly. We also like our kupuna, such as Berney Colman, to share their knowledge about rigging and our koa and help strengthen the intergenerational exchange of knowledge.
To document and preserve this educational experience, we have invited a student media program from Kihei Charter School to assist with photo and video coverage. This documentation will allow us to archive and share this learning experience with future generations.
This is a valuable opportunity to provide hands-on learning for our youth while contributing to a broader island-wide effort to preserve and share traditional knowledge.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback, and let us know if you are available to help.
Sincerely,
Damon Austin
